Tour on Javakheti Lakes

During the tour we’ll visit the mysteriously beautiful lakes in Javakheti Protected Areas: Kartsakhi, Bughdasheni, Madatapa, Saghamo and Paravani Lakes. 

Kartsakhi Lake is a soda lake in the Caucasus Mountains. It sits on the international border between Georgia (53%) and Turkey (47%), covering an area of 26.3 km² (10.2 sq. mi) at an altitude of 1799 m (5902 ft), with the basin area of 158 km² (61 sq. mi) and the maximum depth - 1 m (3.3 ft). The volume of water is 19.3 million m³. Water is saltish and covered with ice from December to middle of March. It is fed by a number of creeks. During the rainy season its excess water discharges to Mtkvari River. An important bird habitat, it holds one of the largest populations of Eurasian eagle-owl in the country, with the Dalmatian pelican and great white pelican. The village of Kartsakhi lies near its northeastern bank. The village of Kartsakhi lies near its northeastern bank. The trail runs along the shore of Kartsakhi Lake before reaching a bird watching tower and goes back via another route. Birds can be observed from the tower, which features informational boards on local species, and visitors can make use of the picnic area. The route is of particular interest to ornithologists and those who enjoy fishing.

Bughdasheni Lake - a lake in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia, in Ninotsminda district, covering an area of 0.39 km² (0.2 sq. mi) at an altitude of 2040 m (6693 ft), with the basin area of 69.3 km² (26.8 sq. mi) and the maximum depth - 0.85 m (2.8 ft). The volume of water is 164 600 m³. Much of the Southern part of this area consists of wetlands. The area around the lake is home for part of the year to many species of migratory birds and the shore largely pristine and undisturbed. A picnic area and the bird watching tower are available for use by visitors. The lake is rich in fish.

Madatapa Lake - a lake in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of southeastern Georgia, near the Armenian border. Covering an area of 8.78 km² (3.4 sq.mi) at an altitude of 2108 m (6916 ft), with the basin area of 136 km² (52.5 sq. mi), the maximum depths – 1.7 m (5.6 ft). The volume of water is 9.7 million m³. It is found in one of the most earthquake-prone areas of the Caucasus. The lake is fully frozen during wintertime. This shallow lake, along with Khanchali Lake, is one of the most important in the country for breeding and staging waterbirds, including the endangered Dalmatian pelican. Four villages lie around the lake. Biketi Lake lies to the north. 

Saghamo Lake - a tectonic lake in Samtskhe-Javakheti region, southeastern Georgia, covering an area of 4.8 km² (1.9 sq. mi) at an altitude of 1996 m (6549 ft), with the basin area of 528 km² (203.9 sq. mi), the maximum and average depths are - 2.3 m (7.5 ft) and 1.6 m (5.2 ft).  The volume of water is 7.7 million m³. It is located north of Madatapa Lake and Biketi Lake. The village of Saghamo lies on its eastern bank. 

Paravani Lake - a volcanic lake in Georgia, located in Javakheti Plateau between Abul-Samsari and Javakheti Ranges. Paravani Lake is located 2073 m (6801 ft) above sea level and has a surface area of 37.5 km² (14.5 sq mi) and a drainage basin of 234 km² (90.3 sq mi). Its maximum and average depths are 3.3 m (10.8 ft) and 2.2 m (7.2 ft) respectively. The volume of the lake is 91.000.000 m³ (3.2×109 cu ft). The water level is low during October and November and is high during May and June. The lake is frozen during wintertime and the thickness of the ice ranges from 47 to 73 cm (19 to 29 in). In addition to the small rivers, the lake gets its water from snow, rain, and underground springs. The Paravani River begins from the southern part of the lake, and connects to the Mtkvari River to the right. This freshwater lake is rich in fish and is a popular destination for fishing. Five villages lie around the lake.

Tour in Lagodekhi Protected Areas

Lagodekhi is located at the foot of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, it lies within Georgian wine country, in the Kakheti district of Georgia. Lagodekhi has a number of nearby waterfalls and includes the Lagodekhi Nature Reserve, established in 1912 and first noted by Polish botanist Ludwik Młokosiewicz for having a variety of tree species.

You will enjoy the rare beauty of Lagodekhi Nature Reserve, gorgeous forests of Lagodekhi during the tour. You will have unique opportunity to see various plants and endemic flowers in the wildlife, also the rich wild fauna of Lagodekhi.

Tobavarchkhili Lakes

Within the tour you will be able to see Colchis forests, coniferous forests, caves, canyons, waterfalls, peaks, alpine meadows, mineral springs, and beautiful, crystal clear alpine lakes, called “Tobavarchkhili, which in Megrelian means "Silver Lake".

Despite the fact that the road to the silver lake is quite difficult, Tobavarchkhili is becoming increasingly popular among eco tourists from year to year.

Tourists call the Tobavarchkhili Lakes ”the magic lakes”, "true paradise", "the wonder of nature" and "the cruel-hearted Beauty".

 

1 day - We will leave from Tbilisi at 6 am for the village Mukhuri of Chkhorotsku district, getting there in about 5 hours. This is starting point for us. After 4-5 hours driving by the appropriate vehicle from Mukhuri we’ll encamp in the alpine zone, at the shepherd's hut, in the area of ​​"Natiphuru" (3000 m above sea level).

2 days – We will walk towards Tsashkibuli Tobavarchkhili Lake (walking trail - 8 km). On the way we will pass beautiful gorge and alpine meadows, will see the shepherds and their hut. Finally we’ll get to the Tsashkibuli lake and encamp there.

3 days – We will visit the "Chitagvala" lake, also "Didighali", "Kalashi" and "Tsakatskari" lakes, and in the evening will return to the place of primary dislocation – to the camp at the Tsashkibuli lake.

4 days – Early in the morning we will walk back to the auto road. At about 6 o’clock we’ll be at the bank of Khobistskali river, where the appropriate vehicle will wait for us. After driving about 40 minutes to village Mukhuri, we will return to Tbilisi by minibus.
